A traditional handloom Textile of Odisha, India was famous for a cotton sari known as the Habaspuri sari. It is one of the major products of the textile of Odisha. The Bhulia weavers of Chicheguda, Kalahandi district, Odisha are originally attributed to the weaving of the Habaspuri fabric. It had an identity as one of the 14 Geographical Indication of Odisha.
Etymology
Habaspuri Handloom is named after village of habaspur in Kalahandi district, where it is origin and woven till the 19th century. Gradually, it cannot stand against the current fabric who were low in cost due to machine production. Time has changed and so us, glory of Habaspuri saree is on the way.
Style
An old age tribal traditions of kalahandi. It is the inspiration of Habaspuri sari. The designs is extraordinary with Konda tribe weavers of the region and traditional patterns like kumba, fish, tortoise, flowers, tribal wall art and tattoos, much more.
Features
In a longitudinal manner the extra wrap kumbha motifs is arranged. To give elegant look the threads of multiple color's till five are used for motifs. A selected motifs of the border is woven in the middle of the anchal in an enlarged manner to produce unified effect. The vertical arrangement of motifs in border instead of horizontal arrangement. Traditional tribal motifs in the anchal has extra weft designs.
Revival
Chicheguda village is the home of thirty weavers families scholarly to revive the habaspuri saree. Decline of dynasty rule, the Ugrasen Meher in Chicheguda is the person who is behind the revival of Habaspuri saree. Slowly the government formed the Chicheguda handloom cooperative society who is responsible for training of weavers and marketing. There is lot more to be done for skill improving in regular period of time. Habaspuri saree is unhurriedly gaining it's charm.
