Ancestral costume of Kerala- Balaramapuram Mundum Neriyarum

Balaramapuram mundum neriyatum is traditional keralaKerala clothing for women. It covers only lower part the body and is the oldest remnant of ancient form of saree.

The traditional piece mundu is the lower part of the body while neriyatu is the upper garment. Therefore mundum neriyatum means two pieces of cloth and can be worn either radical style or modern style.

Origin

Mundum Neriyatum is innovated form of sattika an ancient sari form referred in Hindu, Jain and Buddhist literature.

Eventually the mundu neriyatum evolved what is now we known as Kerala saree.

Cultural symbolism

In Malayali community, mundum Neriyatum is the cultural costume.

The golden border with plain white or off white enhance the Kerala women beauty. Many painters and artists are inspired by the age old costume of Kerala and artistically present it in their art.
